Excavation Nears Completion For India’s First Underground Bullet Train Station At BKC

September 24, 2025: The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has announced that excavation work for the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) station, a key component of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train corridor, is close to completion. Officials confirmed that 84 per cent of the work has been carried out, reaching a depth of 32.5 metres – the equivalent of a ten-storey building. Once excavation is concluded, attention will turn to the construction of world-class station infrastructure.

The BKC station will be India’s first underground bullet train terminus and the only subterranean stop along the 508-kilometre high-speed rail corridor. Its design takes inspiration from clouds and the waves of the Arabian Sea, creating a structure that reflects the natural beauty of the region.

Spread across three levels – platform, concourse, and service floor – the station will house six platforms, each approximately 415 metres long. To ensure passenger convenience, two entry and exit points are planned: one providing direct access to the upcoming Metro Line 2B station, and the other connecting towards the MTNL building. Skylights have also been incorporated into the design to maximise natural lighting and enhance the travel experience.

Though NHSRCL has yet to announce a definitive completion date, the steady pace of excavation suggests strong progress. The BKC terminus is expected to become a pivotal part of Mumbai’s transport network, offering commuters a modern, efficient, and high-speed travel option.

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train project, spanning two states, is one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure initiatives, designed to significantly cut travel times while setting new standards in passenger comfort and connectivity. The BKC station, once completed, will serve as both the symbolic and operational gateway to this transformative rail corridor.
