India Strengthens Global AI Infrastructure With New Centres Of Excellence

September 24, 2025: India is set to play a pivotal role in the next wave of artificial intelligence (AI) adoption with the establishment of dedicated AI Infrastructure Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in Mumbai and Bengaluru. Backed by an initial investment of Rs 100 crore over the next 12 months, the initiative will support enterprises worldwide in building and operating specialised AI data centres – the backbone for scaling generative and agentic AI.

Unlike traditional CPU-based data centres, AI infrastructure requires higher power capacity, denser racks, liquid cooling systems, and access to sustainable energy sources. Industry experts note that demand for such advanced facilities is accelerating rapidly, positioning India as a global hub thanks to its talent pool and cost advantages.

The CoEs are designed to deliver end-to-end capabilities, from strategy and design to implementation and operations. This includes supporting enterprises in managing cybersecurity risks, optimising expenditure, and accelerating AI deployment across sectors such as banking, government, life sciences, and technology.

Mumbai, already recognised as the country’s data centre capital with over half of India’s facilities located in Maharashtra, will serve as the infrastructure hub. Bengaluru, meanwhile, will provide the required technology expertise. Teams specialising in simulation, solution architecture, data centre design, and cybersecurity are already being assembled to deliver services globally.

The move comes at a time when global technology leaders and hyperscalers are investing heavily in AI infrastructure. NVIDIA recently announced a 100 billion dollar commitment with OpenAI, while cloud providers are allocating upwards of 45 billion dollar annually to the development of AI-ready data centres.

Industry analysts believe India’s entry into this space will strengthen its position as a strategic hub for AI infrastructure, creating a strong foundation for the intelligent enterprises of the future.
