September 26, 2025: Mumbai witnessed two major disruptions on Thursday morning, triggering traffic snarls and safety concerns across the city. In Borivali West, a road cave-in was reported at Kalpana Chawla Chowk, while just hours later, a car fire inside the Coastal Road tunnel forced officials to halt vehicular movement. Both incidents have highlighted the city’s fragile infrastructure and the urgent need for enhanced safety measures.
The road cave-in occurred around 6:45 a.m. at Kalpana Chawla Chowk, located under the Suman Nagar bridge in Borivali West. A large depression formed suddenly in the middle of the busy junction, which typically sees heavy vehicular movement during peak hours. Police immediately cordoned off the affected portion and installed barricades to prevent accidents. Motorists were advised to avoid the area until repairs are carried out. While no injuries were reported, the incident has once again raised concerns over the condition of Mumbai’s roads, particularly after the monsoon season and recurring waterlogging. Traffic diversions are expected around the junction until restoration is complete.
Later in the morning, at around 9:30 a.m., a car caught fire inside the southbound tunnel of the Coastal Road. The blaze forced officials to suspend traffic in both directions. Confirming the situation on its official X handle, the Mumbai Traffic Police said, “Traffic movement is stopped at Coastal Road (Tardeo) southbound and northbound due to a car fire.”
Emergency teams quickly doused the flames, and diversions were put in place at Haji Ali and the Worli connector to manage congestion. Although no injuries were reported, the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The twin incidents disrupted the morning commute for thousands of Mumbaikars and reinforced calls for stricter safety checks on city infrastructure.
