September 29, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has invited a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the upgradation, operation, maintenance, and transfer of facilities at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Sports Complex, located on Veera Desai Road, Andheri. The project will be undertaken on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with an indicative cost of Rs 5 crore.
Spread over 46,822 square metres, the complex currently houses an outdoor gym, kids’ play area, basketball court, jogging and cycling tracks, a cricket ground, and a pickleball court. According to the tender document, the selected PPP partner will not only maintain these amenities but also introduce additional facilities such as kabaddi, kho-kho, volleyball, and padel courts. The partner will also be responsible for organising coaching sessions, advanced training for state and national events, and hosting sporting competitions.
Local citizens and representatives have underlined the importance of making the upgraded complex accessible and community-friendly. Dhaval Shah of the Lokhandwala Oshiwara Citizens’ Association said, “The BMC should make the facility welcoming to residents. They should also eliminate issues such as poor parking facilities and ensure the right PPP partner for sprucing up its facilities.”
Former corporator Mohsin Haider stressed affordability, saying, “The BMC has to ensure that the common man has access to all the facilities, as PPP models make it unaffordable for residents to avail facilities due to high charges.”
The project aims to enhance sporting infrastructure in Andheri while balancing professional-level training opportunities with community access.
