September 29, 2025: The city’s suburban railway network, often described as its lifeline, is facing widespread disruptions as essential maintenance and upgrade works are carried out across major routes. Services will continue to be affected until October 10, with passengers warned to expect delays, diversions and significant overcrowding.
The overhaul, one of the most extensive in recent years, involves track renewal, signalling modernisation and bridge strengthening – all aimed at improving long-term safety, efficiency and reliability. However, the short-term impact is considerable, with lakhs of commuters facing daily inconvenience.
On the Central Line, services between Thane and Kalyan are being curtailed, particularly during peak hours. The Western Line is operating with reduced frequency during non-peak times, with diversions on certain stretches causing extended travel times. Meanwhile, the Harbour Line is experiencing periodic suspensions, largely during night blocks, affecting evening and late-night passengers.
Authorities are urging commuters to plan ahead and make use of alternative options. BEST buses and metro services have been mobilised to absorb some of the extra passenger load, while shared autos, taxis and app-based rides are also available, albeit with anticipated crowding during rush hours.
Passengers have been advised to remain cautious and follow safety protocols, particularly when navigating congested stations and boarding crowded trains. Railway officials have stressed the need to use foot overbridges responsibly and avoid taking risks during peak crowding.
The disruptions are expected to ease after 10 October, once the works are complete. Officials emphasised that while the temporary inconvenience is unavoidable, the upgrades will deliver smoother journeys, greater reliability and enhanced safety in the long run.
