Mumbai Loses Excess Rainwater As Lakes Hover Below Full Capacity

September 30, 2025: Despite heavy rainfall in Mumbai and Maharashtra over the past 24 hours, the city continues to struggle with storing surplus water. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that water levels across all seven lakes supplying the city stood at 97.57% on Monday morning.

Mumbai relies on Tansa, Bhatsa, Tulsi, Vihar, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, and Modak Sagar lakes for its water supply. While these reservoirs reached full capacity last week, the overall water stock has fluctuated between 95% and 99%, failing to hit the 100% mark.

Experts note that a significant portion of rainwater is being lost as it flows into rivers and the sea. Despite near-capacity levels, the BMC faces challenges in capturing and storing the excess, highlighting the need for better water management infrastructure to prevent wastage during heavy monsoon events.
