October 1, 2025: For the first time in its history, Girgaon has been linked to Mumbai’s railway network through the newly constructed underground Metro-3 station. Located in one of South Mumbai’s most densely populated neighbourhoods and surrounded by century-old residential buildings, the station is already being hailed as a remarkable feat of modern engineering.
Girgaon, also known as Girgaum, is renowned for its heritage architecture, narrow lanes and vibrant community life. The addition of a world-class metro station now brings a modern dimension to the locality, promising to ease the daily commute in this crowded pocket of the city. Part of the Metro-3 corridor running from Worli to Colaba, the station is expected to play a vital role in reducing congestion and improving accessibility.
Images of the Girgaon station recently circulated on social media, attracting widespread appreciation. One caption described it as a “historical stage of Mumbai Metro-3”, highlighting the achievement of constructing a state-of-the-art underground facility in the midst of century-old buildings. Girgaon is one of several key stations on the final phase of the line, alongside Cuffe Parade, Vidhan Bhavan, Churchgate, Hutatma Chowk, CSMT, Kalbadevi, Grant Road, Mumbai Central, Mahalaxmi and Science Museum.
The construction posed exceptional challenges, given the dense location and the need to protect fragile heritage structures. Engineers were tasked with ensuring that excavation and vibrations did not affect the surrounding architecture, making the successful completion of the project a testament to careful planning and execution.
Once the Colaba–Bandra–SEEPZ Metro-3 line becomes fully operational, it will link the southern tip of Mumbai with its major residential and commercial hubs. For Girgaon residents, who have long relied on road transport and distant suburban stations, the metro promises a new era of connectivity and convenience.
