Navi Mumbai International Airport To Open On October 8

October 1, 2025: The long-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) will be inaugurated on 8 October by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a historic milestone for aviation in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani, who inspected the site on Wednesday, personally reviewed final preparations for the greenfield airport.

Designed to eventually handle 90 million passengers annually, NMIA will rank among the largest airports in the world once fully operational. The airport is expected to ease congestion at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, catalyse economic growth, and boost both regional and global connectivity.

In a social media post following his visit, Mr Adani expressed gratitude to the workforce that brought the project to life. “Ahead of the inauguration of Navi Mumbai International Airport on October 8, I met with our differently-abled colleagues, construction workers, women staff, engineers, artisans, firefighters and guards who helped bring this vision to life. This airport is a monument shaped by thousands of hands and hearts,” he wrote.

During his inspection, Mr Adani interacted with project engineers, firefighting staff and retail workers, emphasising the airport’s commitment to inclusivity and safety. Reflecting on the effort behind the project, he said: “Every runway, every terminal, every gate carries the imprint of thousands of hands and hearts. This is more than an airport—it is a monument to the spirit of Bharat, built by its people, for its people.”

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) recently granted NMIA its aerodrome licence after the airport met stringent safety and regulatory requirements. Jointly developed by the Adani Group and Maharashtra’s town planning authority CIDCO, the project will be completed in five phases. The first phase will accommodate 20 million passengers annually and handle half a million metric tonnes of cargo.
