October 4, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced that the first flyover of the ambitious Goregaon–Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project will be operational by May 2026. The 12.2-km corridor, costing an estimated Rs 14,000 crore, is designed to transform connectivity between Mumbai’s western and eastern suburbs through a network of tunnels, flyovers, and interchanges.
The first phase involves the construction of a 1.2-km flyover stretching from near Dindoshi court to the edge of Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). This elevated road will feed directly into two six-kilometre twin tunnels planned beneath the park, linking Goregaon with Mulund.
According to officials, the flyover will stand on 31 pillars, of which 27 have already been erected. Work on the remaining four is underway. “The west-bound arm will be completed by January 2026, with the east-bound arm targeted for April 2026. Following this, ancillary works will be undertaken, and we expect to open the flyover by May 2026,” a civic official told The Indian Express.
The six-lane flyover will feature a modern design with an elevated circular intersection and pedestrian walkways on both sides. Once complete, the GMLR is expected to drastically cut commuting times. Currently, travelling from Goregaon to Mulund during peak hours can take as long as 90 minutes. The new corridor aims to reduce the journey to just 25 minutes.
At the construction site, assembly of a massive Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) imported from Japan has already begun. Drilling under SGNP is expected to commence early next year. While the flyover is on course for completion in 2026, the underground twin tunnels are scheduled to finish by 2028. The entire GMLR project is expected to be fully operational by 2029, offering Mumbaikars long-awaited relief from traffic congestion.
