October 4, 2025: As the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) nears completion, local authorities are accelerating infrastructure, transport, and safety preparations to ensure seamless operations.
Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) Commissioner Kailas Shinde said that although the airport lies outside NMMC limits, the city will act as its “service backbone.” To support connectivity, the corporation is deploying over 50 electric buses to link the airport with Navi Mumbai until the Metro system becomes operational. Additional measures include supplying treated water for non-potable purposes, upgrading directional signage, and improving major access routes such as Thane-Belapur Road, Palm Beach Road, and other arterial corridors.
Connectivity improvements will link South Mumbai via the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, Central and Eastern suburbs through NMMC roads, and North Mumbai, Thane, and Mira-Bhayandar via the upgraded Thane-Belapur Road. These measures will remain in place until the multimodal corridor is completed in four to five years.
NMMC is also aligning its long-term urban plans with the airport’s development, focusing on road widening, new water networks, redevelopment with higher Floor Space Index (FSI), and hospitality infrastructure to support growth in real estate and services.
Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) is undertaking road upgrades, installing streetlighting and signage, and addressing flight safety by monitoring open meat and fish markets to reduce bird strike risks.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) has sanctioned 10 MVA of power for construction activities at NMIA, with capacity to scale up to 20 MVA once operations commence. The utility has pledged to meet future demand, underlining the airport’s potential to drive economic growth in Navi Mumbai and across Maharashtra.
Authorities emphasise that coordinated efforts between NMMC, PMC, and state agencies will ensure that NMIA opens smoothly, supporting both aviation operations and the region’s wider development ambitions.
