October 6, 2025: Progress on Mumbai’s proposed exotic aviary in Nahur has gained momentum, with civic officials confirming the receipt of nine bids for the project. Clarifications on technical and commercial aspects, particularly concerning bank guarantees and operational memorandums of understanding, have been provided to all interested parties. Valued at approximately Rs 166 crore, the initiative is now poised to move from planning into execution.
The facility is envisioned as a green, recreation-oriented precinct in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs. Plans include a landscaped public garden, swimming pool, and courts for basketball and tennis, offering a community-focused leisure environment alongside the aviary. The design aims to combine biodiversity conservation with an urban open space accessible to residents.
According to the zoo administration, the contract is expected to be awarded within a month. Following selection, the contractor will undertake construction and a two-year maintenance period, which may be supported through third-party MoUs to ensure continuity and specialised services. The acquisition of birds will remain the responsibility of the zoo authority, with the overall facility design already finalised.
The aviary will host roughly 22 species, including sun and golden conures, eclectus and African grey parrots, ostriches, toco toucans, and black swans, with dedicated habitats for pelicans, ducks, cranes, and ostriches. Artificial water bodies and habitat-replicating features have been incorporated to provide species-appropriate welfare.
Visitor amenities include seating areas, an amphitheatre, a knowledge centre with thematic displays, walkways, a restaurant, and an artificial waterfall to create an immersive experience. Avian health infrastructure has been prioritised with a dedicated bird hospital and quarantine facilities.
Access and traffic management have also been addressed, with an automated underground rotor-based parking system accommodating up to 60 cars, minimising surface parking and enhancing pedestrian circulation.
With bids received and queries addressed, the Nahur aviary project is now on a clear procedural path. Once a contractor is appointed, construction will commence in line with the zoo’s prepared design, promising a new urban biodiversity and recreation landmark for Mumbai.
