October 9, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed the demolition of a 100-metre-long bridge over one of the inlets of the Poisar River in Gorai, western suburbs. The bridge serves as the only direct connection between the Lower and Upper Koliwada areas, prompting concerns among local residents about accessibility during the reconstruction period.
Civic officials noted that the bridge, at least three decades old, falls within the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) buffer area. “The bridge is included in the BMC’s Development Plan (DP) 2034. However, structural audits indicate that it is in a dilapidated condition. Hence, it has been decided to demolish and reconstruct it,” a BMC official said.
The bridge links two key Koliwada belts, primarily residential areas inhabited by traditional gaothan Koli communities. Residents have voiced strong concerns about the proposed demolition, citing potential inaccessibility during high tides.
“The Koliwadas are low-lying areas near the beaches. Once the bridge is demolished, residents will have to use the beach road, which is an extended 700-metre stretch. During high tide, the beach could be submerged, cutting off access from the mainland,” said Oldin Vaisaikar, chairperson of the Gorai Residential Society. He further requested that authorities consider a partial demolition to minimise inconvenience, stressing the bridge’s importance for emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire engines.
The BMC has assured that a new bridge will be constructed at a cost of ₹4 crore over the next two years. The upgraded structure will include sturdy railings, light poles, and dedicated footpaths at both ends for pedestrians. Officials say the reconstruction will ensure long-term safety and improved infrastructure for residents, while maintaining connectivity between the Koliwadas.
