Infra Firm Awards Rs 542 Crore Contract For Fast-Track Research And Academic Buildings

October 11, 2025: Amid ongoing infrastructure expansion, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has awarded a ₹542.37-crore contract to Capacit’e Infraprojects for the construction of research and academic buildings on a fast-track basis. The project aims to complete the entire construction within 15–18 months, significantly faster than the typical two-and-a-half years or more.

The Powai-based institute has adopted this accelerated construction model to meet its growing infrastructural requirements efficiently. “Fast-track building construction will ensure time efficiency and quicker delivery of infrastructure development projects,” said an IIT Bombay official. The approach follows the successful execution of similar projects elsewhere.

The first phase involves two buildings — the Research Hub and the Drone Centre, each consisting of ground plus nine floors. The Research Hub, spanning 17,000 square metres, will host research and academic activities, while the 12,000-square-metre Drone Centre will accommodate drone research facilities alongside some administrative offices. Conceptual designs for both buildings have been completed, with detailed designs currently underway. The 15–18 month timeline encompasses the entire process, from design to final handover. The buildings will predominantly feature composite steel structures.

Capacit’e Infraprojects Limited has stated that the project scope includes design drawings, finishing works, water supply and sanitary installations, internal and external electrical systems, LAN, Wi-Fi, CCTV, fire-fighting systems, automatic fire alarms and PA systems, solar PV installations, lifts, HVAC systems, substation equipment, DG sets, underground water tanks, and external development.

Last year, IIT Bombay announced a Rs 2,000-crore major infrastructural overhaul covering hostel expansions, new academic buildings, research laboratories, and facilities to support modern teaching and learning methods. The fast-track construction initiative is expected to play a key role in realising the institute’s long-term vision for advanced research and education infrastructure.
