Mumbai–Goa Expressway To Transform Coastal Travel With March 2026 Completion

October 14, 2025: The much-awaited Mumbai–Goa Expressway, officially known as National Highway 66 (NH-66), is nearing completion and is expected to be fully operational by March 2026, marking a new chapter in highway connectivity along the scenic Konkan coast. The project, which began in 2011, aims to revolutionize road travel between Mumbai and Goa, drastically cutting travel time and improving safety, trade, and tourism in Maharashtra’s coastal region.

Originally slated for completion in 2016, the project has seen multiple deadline revisions, with the latest timeline now fixed for March 2026. According to officials, nearly 93% to 95% of the construction work has already been completed. The most challenging stretch, between Panvel and Indapur (approximately 84 km), faced delays due to land acquisition hurdles, environmental clearances, and contractual issues. However, progress on this section has accelerated in recent months.

District-wise, the Raigad and Sindhudurg portions are almost 99% complete, while Ratnagiri’s stretches are in the final stages, ranging between 73% and 86% completion. Once operational, the expressway will significantly reduce travel time between Mumbai and Goa from nearly 12 hours to about 6 hours.

Beyond improved connectivity, the expressway is expected to bring a major boost to regional tourism and economic growth. The easier access is likely to attract more visitors to the Konkan belt, benefiting local hospitality, agriculture, and trade sectors.

The new highway also incorporates several enhanced safety features, including better road surfaces, modern crash barriers, clear markings, and emergency facilities—promising a safer and more comfortable journey for commuters.

As one of the most anticipated infrastructure projects on India’s western coast, the Mumbai–Goa Expressway is set to transform regional mobility and spur socio-economic growth across Maharashtra and Goa.
