CM Fadnavis Unveils Rs 1,299 Crore Ghatkopar Redevelopment, Promises “Slum-Free Mumbai” Vision

October 15, 2025: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday announced the launch of a Rs 1,299 crore mega slum redevelopment project in Ghatkopar (East), marking a major step toward his vision of a “slum-free Mumbai.” The project, covering Mata Ramabai Nagar and Kamraj Nagar—two of Mumbai’s largest slum clusters along the Eastern Express Highway—will feature upgraded housing, open spaces, and civic amenities.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Fadnavis outlined plans for large-scale cluster redevelopments that integrate community facilities and employment opportunities. “We do not want to redevelop horizontal slums to vertical slums,” he said, adding that 50-acre plots have been earmarked for similar projects to ensure comprehensive urban renewal.

The Chief Minister also confirmed that the first phase of Kamraj Nagar’s redevelopment would be completed within two years, with beneficiaries receiving their new homes soon after.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who was also present, noted that the project had been pending for over 15 years. “This redevelopment project was under discussion 15 years ago… it was under the leadership of Devendra Fadnavis, all challenges were overcome,” he remarked.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will, for the first time in its 50-year history, serve as the developer, while the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) will act as the planning authority.

Phase 1 of the redevelopment spans 31.82 hectares and aims to rehabilitate 4,345 of the 16,575 residents within 36 months. Each eligible family will receive a 300 sq ft 1BHK flat, with Rs 137.5 crore allocated as advance rent. The project will also include gardens, gyms, and a health centre, while a commercial unit will be dedicated to the family of martyr Murli Naik in recognition of his service.
