Mumbai Metro Yellow Line 2B To Begin Operations In December, 2nd Phase Expected By 2026

October 15, 2025: Mumbai’s long-awaited Metro Yellow Line 2B is nearing completion, with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) targeting a December 2025 launch for the first phase and a summer 2026 rollout for the second, according to a Hindustan Times report.

The 23.6-km elevated corridor will serve as a crucial east-west connector, linking Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs and easing daily commutes for lakhs of residents. Trial runs are currently being conducted on the 5.3-km Mandale–Diamond Garden section in Chembur, which includes five stations and will benefit commuters from Chembur, Govandi, and Mankhurd. The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety has already granted the required approvals for this phase, with final checks underway before the line opens to the public.

The second phase, extending from DN Nagar to Saraswat Nagar in Khar, is expected to be operational by mid-2026. Once complete, this stretch will enable a seamless Metro ride from Dahisar to Khar, covering key stops such as ESIC Nagar, Prem Nagar, Indira Nagar, Nanavati Hospital, and Khira Nagar.

However, the central stretch—spanning Bandra West, Bandra Kurla Complex, Kurla, and Chembur—remains without a fixed completion date.

Costing Rs 10,986 crore, Line 2B has faced multiple delays due to contractor issues, power line relocations, and bureaucratic hurdles. The corridor will feature six-coach, indigenously manufactured BEML trains equipped with regenerative braking, CCTV surveillance, mobile charging points, and bicycle spaces. By 2031, the line is expected to carry over 10 lakh passengers daily and cut cross-city travel times by up to 75%.
