October 17, 2025: A recently redeveloped road at Kala Ghoda in South Mumbai has gone under repair merely six months after completion, raising questions about the quality of civic works. A post on X by the handle @BombaySpy shared a photo showing a lone worker attempting to fix a portion of the road, which had been closed once again for repairs.
The post read: “Peak Corruption. Hi @mybmc, why have a single old & unqualified worker try to fix a newly made road which is less than 6 months old? Budget: Rs 70,000 crore. Actual Spent: Rs 70 for the old guy to smash one rock at a time. Result: the road is closed. Kala Ghoda, Mumbai.”
Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said the rectification was necessary as the movement of heavy vehicles shortly after construction had dislodged some cobblestones. The civic body termed it a “minor rectification.”
“As part of Phase 1 of the Kalaghoda beautification works, a 70-metre stretch of Sai Baba Lane (from Trishna Hotel to K. Dubhash) and a 30-metre stretch of Dr V.B. Gandhi Marg remain to be completed. Work on these will begin soon. Given the Diwali period, excavation of the remaining 100-metre stretch is planned to start from October 24. Meanwhile, rectification of the earlier work is underway by skilled labourers and requires a setting period of five to six days. Barricades have been placed for safety and will be removed by this Saturday once the surface sets,” said a BMC official.
The BMC’s ongoing Kala Ghoda beautification project aims to make the area more pedestrian-friendly, replacing asphalt with cobblestone paving across V.B. Gandhi Marg, Rope Walk Lane, Saibaba Road, and other adjoining streets.
