MMRDA To Cut 320 Trees, Transplant 386 For Infrastructure Project

October 17, 2025: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has secured approval to cut 320 trees and transplant 386 for its upcoming infrastructure project, while committing to plant 4,175 new trees as part of compensatory measures. Officials confirmed that all requisite permissions were obtained from the Tree Authority after a joint inspection with the BMC’s garden department, and no tree-related activity will take place without statutory clearance.

“We are committed to developing essential transport infrastructure while protecting and expanding Mumbai’s green cover,” said an MMRDA spokesperson.

According to officials, the authority made design changes to minimise tree loss. On the Vikhroli–Ghatkopar stretch, the alignment was adjusted to preserve 127 Pink Trumpet trees, celebrated for their seasonal blooms. In total, 949 trees will remain untouched. The transplantation process is being carried out using scientific methods such as root-ball preservation, soil stabilisation, and post-transplant monitoring to maximise survival rates.

Under the compensatory plantation plan, 4,175 trees will be planted within and around the project area. “The focus will be on native and pollution-resistant species to improve biodiversity and strengthen the city’s green cover,” an MMRDA official said.

Officials added that the project is expected to reduce travel time by nearly 40%, cut fuel use, and enhance air quality. “Infrastructure growth and environmental protection can go hand in hand,” the spokesperson noted. “Through compensatory planting and sustainable design, MMRDA is ensuring balanced development for Mumbai.”

However, residents and environmental groups from Vikhroli and Ghatkopar have raised objections, urging further realignment to save more mature trees and calling for greater transparency in the transplantation process.
