October 21, 2025: Mumbai’s Metro Line 12 is setting new records for speed and efficiency in metro construction, marking a turning point for urban transport infrastructure in India. Within just a year of its Bhoomi Pujan, multiple pillars with caps have already been completed, while work at the depot site is progressing rapidly—an unusual feat for the city’s typically delayed projects.
The 22.17 km elevated corridor will connect Kalyan to Taloja, linking Mumbai Metro Line 5 with Navi Mumbai Metro’s Line 1. Spearheaded by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the project represents an investment of over Rs 8,400 crore. French consultancy firm Systra is providing technical consultancy, and Gawar Construction is executing the civil works. Officials have described the pace of construction as “unprecedented” for Mumbai’s metro network, which has often faced delays due to land acquisition hurdles and logistical challenges.
Once operational, Metro Line 12 is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between Kalyan, Dombivli, and Taloja—three rapidly growing urban clusters. The new line will decongest road traffic and offer thousands of daily commuters a faster, cleaner, and more sustainable mode of transport.
The simultaneous progress on both the mainline and depot construction underscores a high level of coordination and execution efficiency, rarely seen in previous metro projects. For Mumbaikars, this progress signals not just improved connectivity but also a shift toward timely and well-managed infrastructure development.
