Ghatkopar Rehabilitation Work Begins Ahead Of Rs 26.6 Billion Eastern Freeway Expansion

October 24, 2025: The first phase of the rehabilitation project at Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar and Kamraj Nagar in Ghatkopar has begun, marking a key step toward the expansion of the upcoming Rs 26.6 billion Eastern Freeway between Ghatkopar and Thane. Six new rehabilitation buildings are currently under construction, while preparations are underway to clear 1,694 slums in the next phase.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has instructed the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) to vacate the designated slum areas by December to enable the commencement of freeway construction early next year. According to SRA officials, the verification process for eligible slum dwellers has been completed. The MMRDA has also transferred funds covering two years of rent to assist with relocation during the transition period, as reported by Loksatta.

The MMRDA’s proposed freeway will stretch 12.96 kilometres and span 40 metres in width, with an estimated cost of Rs 26.62 billion. The project has been awarded to Navyug Engineering and is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Ghatkopar and Thane, while easing congestion in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, recently laid the foundation stone for the freeway project. The rehabilitation process for over 4,000 slum households has already commenced as part of the first phase.

Officials anticipate that the demolition of 1,694 remaining slums will begin in December, after which the land will be handed over to MMRDA. Major construction work is likely to start in early 2026, with completion expected within four years. Once operational, the Eastern Freeway extension is expected to offer faster, smoother, and more efficient connectivity between Thane and Ghatkopar.
