Mumbai’s Eastern Suburbs To Get First Metro: Mandale–Diamond Garden Stretch Of Line 2B Set For Launch

October 24, 2025: Mumbai’s eastern suburbs, including Chembur, are on the brink of a major urban mobility transformation as the Mandale–Diamond Garden stretch of Metro Line 2B gears up for inauguration. For decades, residents in these areas have relied primarily on road transport and the Monorail. With this development, they will soon experience fast, reliable, and modern metro connectivity for the first time.

Phase I of Metro Line 2B covers a 5.5 km elevated corridor from Mandale to Diamond Garden, featuring five stations — Mandale, Mankhurd, BSNL, Shivaji Chowk, and Diamond Garden. This corridor is expected to serve thousands of passengers daily, easing pressure on the city’s road network and significantly reducing travel time for eastern suburb commuters.

When fully operational, Metro Line 2B will span 23.6 km from DN Nagar in the west to Mandale in the east, passing through Bandra, Kurla, and Chembur. The line will be a vital east–west connector within Mumbai’s expanding metro network.

Trial runs began in April after electrification, ensuring system readiness, safety, and smooth operations. Following final inspection and approval from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS), the corridor is now ready for commercial launch, expected on October 30 or 31.

The new metro link will cut travel time by 15–20 minutes along V N Purav Road and the Sion–Panvel Highway. Mankhurd station will act as a key interchange point with the Harbour Line, offering seamless multimodal connectivity.

Metro Line 2B’s entirely elevated design includes 20 stations and a 31-acre Mandale carshed. Once fully operational, it is expected to cater to over 10 lakh commuters daily, easing congestion and driving economic growth across Mumbai’s eastern suburbs.
