October 27, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has unveiled plans for a new cable-stayed flyover worth Rs 805 crore that will link Byculla’s historic Y-Bridge to the JJ Flyover, providing a major traffic relief for south Mumbai commuters. The 850-metre-long structure aims to streamline vehicular movement between the eastern suburbs and the island city, significantly easing congestion in Byculla, Nagpada, and Mazgaon — areas notorious for traffic bottlenecks during peak hours.
The proposed flyover will include two additional arms extending toward Olivant Bridge in Mazgaon, offering seamless access to the Eastern Freeway and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL). These new connections are expected to reduce pressure on the Eastern Express Highway and enhance travel efficiency across central and south Mumbai. Officials confirmed that the BMC will fully fund and execute the project, with the tendering process already underway and construction set to begin after final bid approvals.
Replacing the century-old Y-Bridge — built in 1922 and recently declared unsafe — the new structure will feature a modern cable-stayed design known for its strength, longevity, and lower maintenance. Unlike traditional concrete bridges, it will be constructed using stainless steel to ensure resistance to corrosion and faster completion timelines. Civic engineers highlighted that the design choice will also minimize long-term repair requirements.
The Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) will collaborate with the BMC on the project. Once construction begins, the civic body expects completion within 18 months, excluding the monsoon season. The first phase of rebuilding the Y-Bridge is already in progress and is slated for completion by March 2026.
Experts believe the new link will play a crucial role in decongesting traffic and improving air quality, aligning with Mumbai’s broader vision for a modern, sustainable urban transport network.
