October 28, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a landmark Rs 805-crore cable-stayed flyover project to connect Byculla’s Y-Bridge with JJ Flyover, marking a major infrastructure upgrade for South Mumbai.
Planned to decongest the high-traffic Lalbaug–Mazgaon corridor, the project will provide direct connectivity to the Eastern Freeway through two new approach arms linking Olivant Bridge in Mazgaon. Once completed, motorists from Byculla and Lalbaug will be able to bypass bottlenecks and enjoy smoother access to south and central Mumbai.
Spanning 1.18 km, the Byculla Cable-Stayed Flyover will feature a 230-metre cable-stayed section as its signature structure. It will also include a 312-metre viaduct towards JJ Flyover, along with two additional stretches—290 metres on the west and 350 metres on the east near the Y-Bridge—to enhance traffic flow and ease pressure on key junctions such as Richardson and Cruddas Road.
The project’s design incorporates advanced engineering elements, including stainless steel girders, rigid pavements, and reinforced ramps capable of sustaining heavy vehicular movement. These features are expected to improve safety, durability, and reduce long-term maintenance.
Complementary infrastructure such as new drainage lines, noise barriers, and upgraded road furniture will further enhance commuter comfort and environmental quality along the route.
According to BMC officials, “Detailed traffic diversion plans will be implemented in coordination with the Mumbai Traffic Police to minimize disruption during construction.” The estimated completion period for the project is 18 months, positioning the Byculla Cable-Stayed Flyover as a symbol of Mumbai’s evolving infrastructure—seamlessly blending modern design with the city’s historic core.
