Six Global Architecture Firms In Race To Design Mumbai’s Coastal Road Gardens

October 28, 2025: Six leading international architecture firms have been shortlisted to design and landscape the Mumbai Coastal Road Gardens. This ambitious project will transform 53 hectares (130 acres) of reclaimed land into verdant public spaces along the city’s western seafront.

Nearly a year after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) flagship Coastal Road was opened to traffic, the initiative to develop the adjoining green zones — stretching from Priyadarshini Park to Worli — has gained momentum. The shortlisted firms hail from the Netherlands, Europe, North Korea, South Korea, and the United States, with Cozy Designs (Netherlands) recently presenting its concept to civic officials. Based on their conceptual designs, one firm will be selected to execute the project.

A senior civic official from BMC’s Coastal Road department said, “It (the project) is at the agreement stage and they are in the process of shortlisting international architects. Fifteen architects were initially contacted, and six were shortlisted based on their experience and manpower. They have been asked to submit a conceptual design. Based on the conceptual design, one firm will be selected.”

To oversee the initiative, the BMC has formed an internal landscaping committee headed by the Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Gardens), comprising the Chief Engineer (Coastal Road), Chief Municipal Architect, and assistant commissioners from G South and D Wards, among others. The committee will review and approve the final conceptual plan before work begins post-Diwali.

The Coastal Road Gardens project aims to blend infrastructure with ecology through walking and cycling tracks, themed gardens, plazas, and smart lighting—all designed to enhance sustainability and community engagement. Once complete, the initiative will turn Mumbai’s Coastal Road into a vibrant green waterfront, symbolising the city’s evolving urban landscape.
