Uttan–Virar Sea Link Gets Environmental Clearance, Paving Way For Construction

October 28, 2025: Mumbai’s long-awaited Uttan–Virar Sea Link (UVSL) has received approval from the Environmental Department, setting the stage for construction to begin soon. The clearance represents a major step toward completing Mumbai’s coastal corridor — a continuous, signal-free route connecting South Mumbai to the northern suburbs.

Spanning nearly 24 kilometres along the western coastline, the UVSL will link Uttan to Virar through three key connectors: a 9 km Uttan link connecting to the Dahisar–Bhayandar corridor, a 2.5 km Vasai link leading into central Vasai, and an 18 km Virar link merging with the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway. Together, these sections will enable seamless traffic flow from Marine Drive through Versova and Bhayandar to Virar, integrating with the ongoing Versova–Bhayandar–Dahisar Coastal Road project.

For residents of Vasai, Virar, and Dahanu, the sea link is expected to significantly reduce travel time to South Mumbai by diverting vehicles from the heavily congested Western Express Highway and S.V. Road. The route promises faster, safer, and more efficient access to business districts and residential hubs.

Authorities believe the UVSL will also act as a catalyst for economic growth by opening new investment corridors along the coast. Improved access to Uttan and Vasai could attract tourism, hospitality, and real estate developments, while stronger links to industrial areas will likely boost employment and trade.

The project will adopt sustainable construction practices and eco-friendly design to minimize environmental impact and reduce carbon emissions by easing traffic congestion.

With environmental permissions now in place, the government will move forward with tendering and execution. Once the Versova–Dahisar Coastal Road is completed by 2028, the UVSL will extend the corridor northward — creating a direct, uninterrupted coastal route from Marine Drive to Virar.
