October 29, 2025: Thane’s Ghodbunder Road, once on the city’s outskirts, is now at the heart of its urban growth story. Once known for its quiet stretches, the area’s rapid development and booming real estate have made it a crucial corridor for daily commuters — but also a hotspot for traffic congestion. To address this, several large-scale infrastructure projects are underway to enhance connectivity and ease travel.
The Mumbai Metro Line 4 (Wadala–Kasarvadavli) is nearing completion, set to transform east-west travel through Thane. A major milestone was achieved this year with the installation of a 48-metre steel span at Kapurbawadi Junction. Once operational, the line will cut commute times by up to 75%, featuring 30 elevated stations, including an interchange with Line 5.
To tackle congestion, Ghodbunder Road is being widened into a six-lane highway by merging service roads with the main carriageway. Parallelly, the 13.44-km Balkum–Gaimukh Coastal Road, costing ₹3,364 crore, is being developed as an alternative east-west corridor.
The Thane–Borivali Tunnel, stretching nearly 12 km beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, will reduce travel time between the two suburbs to just 10–15 minutes. Additionally, the Thane–Bhayander link, featuring a 5.5 km tunnel and a 9.8 km elevated road, is estimated at ₹20,000 crore and aims to complete the regional ring road.
Other initiatives include converting Metro Line 4 service lanes into passenger bays for safer transit, and an upcoming pod taxi network covering 52 km with 63 stations under a PPP model.
Adding to the city’s livability, the newly opened NaMo Grand Central Park near Kolshet Road offers a 20.5-acre green retreat with jogging tracks, sports courts, and landscaped gardens — redefining Thane’s urban landscape.
