MMRDA Plans 21-km Double Decker Flyover Linking Navi Mumbai To Bhiwandi

November 03, 2025: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is planning to construct a 21-kilometre double-decker flyover connecting Shil Phata junction with Ranjnoli junction in Bhiwandi via Kalyan. Once completed, it could become the country’s longest flyover, accommodating both a four-lane road and metro rail tracks.

According to MMRDA officials, the elevated corridor will intersect with major infrastructure projects, including the Virar-Alibaug multi-modal corridor and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train line. “We are in the process of appointing a consultant to prepare a detailed project report for the proposed flyover,” said an MMRDA official, requesting anonymity. “The consultant will also manage the bidding process and oversee the execution of the project.”

Currently, the 11-km Visweswaraiah flyover in Hyderabad is India’s longest, while the 165-km Yamuna Expressway holds the record for the longest elevated road.

As per the proposed alignment, the flyover will begin at Shil Phata on National Highway 48 (Old Mumbai-Pune Highway), pass through Dombivli and Kalyan, and end at Ranjnoli Junction on National Highway 160 (Mumbai-Nashik Highway). It will also integrate with the Airoli-Katai Freeway at Katai Naka and the Virar-Alibaug multi-modal corridor nearby.

Project documents indicate that the upper deck will carry three metro lines — Metro 5 (Bhiwandi to Kalyan) between Durgadi Fort and Ranjnoli junction, Metro 12 (Kalyan to Taloja) between Kalyan APMC and Runwal junction, and Metro 14 (Kanjurmarg to Badlapur) between Shil Phata and Katai Naka.

“The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train’s alignment in the vicinity of the project will also be included in the review while preparing the detailed project report,” the official added.

The flyover will cross railway tracks at two points — near Katai Naka and Patri Pul in Kalyan — posing engineering challenges due to dense rail traffic on the central line.
