November 04, 2025: Work on the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) first-ever cable-stayed bridge over the Mahalaxmi railway tracks has reached 45 per cent completion, civic officials confirmed. Originally slated for completion in March 2024, the project has been delayed due to encroachments, utility relocations, and tree transplantation, with the new deadline now extended to December 2026.
At the heart of the design stands a 70-metre-high central pylon, which will act as the main structural support. Once operational, the bridge is expected to ease traffic congestion near Mahalaxmi station and improve east–west connectivity for motorists travelling toward the Coastal Road from Haji Ali.
Rising from the Racecourse side along Keshavrao Khadye (KK) Marg in the west, the bridge will span the Western Railway tracks and conclude near Shirin Talkies on the eastern side. The 736-metre-long bridge includes a 165-metre cable-stayed span, an 85-metre back span, and a 23-metre-wide deck accommodating four traffic lanes.
Awarded in January 2020, the project began construction the following month, with an estimated cost of Rs 389 crore. The bridge will replace the existing structure, which will be dismantled once the new one is operational to ensure uninterrupted connectivity during construction.
A senior civic official said, “The project faced delays due to the impact on nearby houses, establishments, and trees, along with design changes needed after identifying key utilities such as water channels, sewer lines, stormwater drains, and BEST cables along the alignment.”
As per the revised schedule, the 90-metre western span will be completed by December 2025, while the 160-metre eastern span is expected by September 2026. Work on approach roads will progress simultaneously, with the entire bridge targeted for completion by December 2026.
