November 05, 2025: A monorail train tilted during a test run at Mumbai’s Wadala depot on Wednesday morning, officials confirmed. The incident occurred around 9 a.m. during signalling trials, though no injuries were reported. The train, which had no passengers on board, suffered minor damage.
Images and videos circulating on social media showed the monorail slightly tilted, prompting concerns over the system’s recurring technical challenges. A fire brigade team rescued two crew members who were inside the train at the time of the mishap.
Officials from Maha Mumbai Metro Rail Operations Limited (MMMOCL) have yet to issue an official statement. Preliminary information suggests that the train was part of ongoing signalling tests being conducted as part of a larger system upgrade.
The incident comes at a time when monorail services in Mumbai have already been suspended since September 20 for extensive technical and system upgradation work. The suspension followed multiple breakdowns that raised questions about the network’s reliability and safety.
Earlier, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had appointed a special committee to investigate repeated operational failures. The probe follows several technical disruptions in recent months — including incidents on September 15 and August 19, when hundreds of passengers were left stranded mid-journey after trains came to a halt at different locations.
According to officials, maintenance and safety trials will continue as part of efforts to restore services after the upgradation. However, Wednesday’s mishap may delay those plans further, adding to the challenges facing Mumbai’s monorail system — once envisioned as a modern addition to the city’s public transport network.
