November 06, 2025: Commuters on Central Railway’s Belapur–Uran corridor are set for a major boost this November, with the introduction of 10 additional suburban train services and the opening of two new stations — Targhar and Gavhan.
According to officials, Targhar station, located near the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, will cater to both daily commuters and airport staff, significantly improving last-mile connectivity to the airport zone. Meanwhile, Gavhan station will enhance accessibility for residents in the rapidly developing Uran region, where population and housing growth have surged in recent years.
The corridor currently operates 40 services, and civil and signalling work at both new stations has been completed. Final inspections are underway, and the upgraded operations are expected to be commissioned later this month, pending mandatory approvals.
Jointly funded by CIDCO and Central Railway in a 67:33 ratio, the Belapur–Uran line is one of Navi Mumbai’s most critical infrastructure projects, connecting the growing Uran belt to the Mumbai suburban rail network.
Originally proposed in 1997 and monitored under the Prime Minister’s PRAGATI portal, the project has faced repeated delays due to challenges in land acquisition. Nearly 14 hectares of private land were acquired, raising the project cost from Rs 495 crore to Rs 1,782 crore.
The corridor also features extensive infrastructure, including four bridges, five road-overbridges, 15 underpasses, and a track underbridge, ensuring smooth and safe operations across the route.
Once operational, the upgrade is expected to ease congestion, improve regional mobility, and strengthen connectivity between Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Uran, aligning with the city’s expanding transport and airport infrastructure network.
