November 07, 2025: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has achieved a significant milestone in the Mumbai Metro Line 4 project with the successful installation of a 56-metre-long, 450-ton steel span over the busy GMLR (Bhandup–Sonapur) Junction. The complex overnight operation marks another major step toward project completion, with over 84.5% of the construction now finished.
The challenging task was executed seamlessly despite unseasonal rains and limited working space, ensuring no disruption to vehicular traffic. Over 100 skilled workers, supported by nine high-capacity cranes and two multi-axle pullers, worked through the night to lift and position the massive two-girder steel span with precision.
The fully elevated Green Line, spanning 32.32 kilometres, will connect Wadala in the south to Kasarvadavali in the north, integrating 30 stations that link Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs. An additional 2.668-kilometre extension (Line 4A) will further extend the corridor from Kasarvadavali to Gaimukh, adding two more stations to the network.
The project is being developed in three phases:
Phase 1 (Gaimukh to Cadbury Junction) – completion expected by April 2026, with four stations ready by December 2025.
Phase 2 (Cadbury to Gandhi Nagar) – slated for completion by October 2026.
Phase 3 (Gandhi Nagar to Wadala) – targeted for October 2027.
The installation highlights MMRDA’s focus on engineering precision, safety, and timely execution, reinforcing its commitment to expanding Mumbai’s metro network. Once operational, Metro Line 4 is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve suburban connectivity, and significantly reduce travel time for thousands of commuters daily.
