Six-Coach Trains Planned On Metro 1 To Ease Mumbai’s Peak-Hour Rush

November 07, 2025: Mumbai’s Ghatkopar–Andheri–Versova Metro 1 corridor, among the city’s busiest transit routes, is set for a major capacity boost as Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) prepares to introduce six-coach trains to tackle peak-hour congestion.

With daily ridership crossing five lakh passengers, the current four-coach trains are struggling to manage heavy footfall—especially at high-traffic stations such as Andheri, Western Express Highway, and Ghatkopar. The move aims to offer commuters greater comfort and reduce overcrowding during rush hours.

MMOPL has submitted a detailed proposal for the train expansion to the National Asset Reconstruction Company Limited (NARCL) through the India Debt Resolution Company Limited (IDRCL). Once approvals are secured, the upgrade will add two additional coaches per train, substantially increasing passenger capacity.

Officials said the initiative aligns with MMOPL’s goal to enhance commuter convenience and optimize operations. The six-coach configuration is expected to ease crowding, ensure smoother boarding, and improve overall travel efficiency on Mumbai’s first metro corridor, which has been operational since 2014.

The upgrade comes at a crucial time, as the soon-to-be operational Mumbai Metro Line 3 will interconnect with Metro 1 at Marol station, likely increasing overall passenger load. Anticipating this surge, MMOPL’s expansion plan is designed to accommodate future growth in demand and maintain seamless connectivity across the network.

According to MMOPL officials, the proposed enhancement will not only meet long-standing commuter expectations but also reinforce Metro 1’s role as a vital east-west transit lifeline for the city. They added that the introduction of six-coach trains will “enhance the efficiency and reliability” of Mumbai’s metro system, ensuring faster, safer, and more comfortable journeys for millions of daily users.
