BMC To Revive 319 Mumbai Ponds As Public And Tourist Spaces Through CSR Support

November 10, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched an extensive initiative to restore 319 ponds across Mumbai and convert them into public-friendly and tourist destinations. The project will be financed through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partnerships with private companies, reducing reliance on municipal funds. The initiative aims to improve biodiversity, maintain ecological balance, and provide citizens with more open spaces for recreation and community activities.

A senior civic official said the project will begin with the restoration of 30 ponds across various municipal wards. These have been selected based on accessibility, public use, and maintenance condition. After completing the pilot phase, the initiative will be expanded to the remaining ponds. Of the 319 identified, 309 are under BMC’s jurisdiction, while 10 belong to other agencies such as the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), and other local bodies.

Following directions from the municipal commissioner, BMC teams are collecting detailed data on each pond’s size, depth, and surrounding conditions to create customised restoration plans. “Surveys are being conducted for each pond separately to study the water quality, surrounding structures, and current maintenance needs,” said an official. Based on these assessments, restoration models may include de-silting, landscaping, pathway development, and improved lighting and cleanliness around the sites.

The civic body has also prioritised heritage ponds such as Bandra Talao and Banganga Tank for special conservation efforts. Bandra Talao, a Grade II heritage site, has served as a local landmark for centuries. BMC plans to use such heritage sites to promote regional tourism and preserve Mumbai’s cultural identity through restoration and beautification.

The initiative, once implemented, is expected to combine environmental restoration with public engagement and cultural preservation.
