MMRDA Plans 21-Km Double-Decker Flyover Through Kalyan To Boost Regional Connectivity

November 12, 2025: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is gearing up to construct a 21-kilometre double-decker flyover connecting Shil Phata junction to Ranjnoli junction in Bhiwandi via Kalyan — a project that could become one of the longest of its kind in India.

According to MMRDA officials, the ambitious corridor will integrate a four-lane road on the lower deck and metro rail tracks on the upper deck, forming a crucial link between multiple infrastructure projects such as the Virar–Alibaug multimodal corridor and the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train corridor.
“We are in the process of appointing a consultant to prepare a detailed project report for the proposed flyover,” said an MMRDA official, adding that the consultant will also assist with bidding and execution.

Currently, Hyderabad’s 11-kilometre Visweswaraiah flyover holds the record as India’s longest, while the 165-kilometre Yamuna Expressway is the longest elevated road. The proposed 21-kilometre structure will surpass these in scale, beginning at Shil Phata on National Highway-48 (the old Mumbai–Pune Highway), passing through Dombivli and Kalyan, and concluding at Ranjnoli junction on National Highway-160 (Mumbai–Nashik Highway). It will also intersect with major upcoming corridors like the Airoli–Katai Freeway.

The upper deck will host three metro lines — Metro 5 (Bhiwandi–Kalyan), Metro 12 (Kalyan–Taloja), and Metro 14 (Kanjurmarg–Badlapur) — improving last-mile integration within the region. “The alignment of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train, which runs near the proposed route, will also be reviewed during the preparation of the detailed project report,” the MMRDA official added.

The flyover will cross railway lines at Katai Naka and Patri Pul in Kalyan, posing major engineering challenges due to heavy rail traffic. Once completed, the Shil Phata–Ranjnoli double-decker flyover is expected to significantly ease congestion and enhance multimodal connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
