November 13, 2025: A maintenance alert has been issued for Mumbai Metro Line 2A after corrosion was detected on the roofs of several trains, prompting the MMRC Operations & Maintenance Company Ltd. (MMMOCL) to begin anti-rust repairs. Some trains on the Dahisar to Andheri West route have developed rust within just three and a half years of operation.
Officials from MMMOCL attributed the corrosion primarily to Mumbai’s humid coastal climate and confirmed that repair work has started to protect both the trains and passenger confidence. “Actual corrosion was minor and largely superficial at this stage,” the operator stated, noting that the anti-rust treatment is being applied immediately while a detailed study is conducted to develop long-term preventive measures.
The affected fleet includes trains on Metro 2A and the nearby Metro 7 corridor, both maintained by the same company, with 24 trains currently operational across the two lines. The issue came to public attention after an information-rights activist shared photographs of the rust on social media, prompting the authorities to respond swiftly.
A contractor will be engaged for comprehensive repairs once the investigation is complete. MMMOCL has assured commuters that safety standards are being upheld and there is no plan to suspend services. Anti-rust treatment and maintenance work are being scheduled during non-peak hours to minimise disruption to passengers.
The incident highlights the challenges of maintaining new metro infrastructure in Mumbai’s coastal environment, underscoring the need for continuous vigilance and preventive care. Officials have urged commuters to remain calm, emphasising that the repairs are a precautionary measure aimed at prolonging the service life of the trains and ensuring reliable, safe operations for the growing metro network.
With the anti-rust initiative underway, MMMOCL aims to maintain the operational integrity of Metro 2A while enhancing long-term resilience against Mumbai’s humid climate.
