November 13, 2025: Mumbai is preparing to introduce an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based toll collection system, with a pilot project likely to begin soon at Dahisar toll naka. Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has directed officials to draft a proposal for implementing AI at city toll plazas to speed up payments and ease congestion, according to a Times of India report.
Sarnaik said the AI-powered system aims to streamline toll operations, reduce vehicle waiting times, and help curb pollution caused by traffic buildup at the busy Dahisar entry point. “The integration of AI technology is expected to revolutionise the way tolls are collected, making it a seamless experience for commuters,” he added.
The proposed system will deploy high-resolution cameras, sensors, and machine learning algorithms to automatically identify vehicle details, such as licence plate numbers and type. Toll charges will be deducted directly from motorists’ linked bank accounts—eliminating the need to halt at booths.
A transport department official noted that automating toll collection will boost efficiency and minimise errors common in manual transactions. During a review meeting, Sarnaik called for coordination among key agencies, including the National Highways Authority of India, local police, and municipal bodies, to ensure smooth implementation of the AI-based system.
Officials believe the new system will not only enhance commuter convenience but also improve toll revenue collection by preventing evasion and ensuring accurate billing. The consistent income could help fund road maintenance and infrastructure upgrades across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
This initiative is part of the state government’s larger plan to integrate smart technology into urban transport management, promoting smoother traffic flow and reducing environmental impact. If successful, the Dahisar pilot could pave the way for AI-driven toll collection at other major entry and exit points across the city.
