Mumbai Unveils Mandale Depot, Asia’s Largest Elevated Metro Facility For Line 2B

November 15, 2025: The Mandale Depot for Mumbai Metro Line 2B has been inaugurated, establishing it as Asia’s largest and the country’s first elevated metro depot. Developed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the cutting-edge facility spans 32 hectares and is designed to support the elevated Line 2B, which will connect DN Nagar to Mandale in Mankhurd.

The depot is built as a two-level structure capable of housing 72 rakes. At its core is a G+3 Depot Control Centre, equipped to oversee train operations, maintenance schedules, and safety mechanisms in real time. The centre will play a critical role in ensuring punctual services and enhancing the commuter experience across the corridor. MMRDA officials have highlighted the importance of advanced technological monitoring for maintaining a reliable metro system.

One of the most notable features of the Mandale Depot is its 965-metre test track — the longest metro test track in the country. This track will be used to conduct comprehensive trials before trains are deployed for passenger use. The depot will also include four shunting necks and one elevated neck to streamline train movement and operational efficiency.

The construction of the depot came with its own set of challenges. MMRDA tackled issues such as coastal soil conditions and the creation of access routes for large vehicles through innovative engineering solutions, ensuring smooth progress of the project.

The facility has also earned the title of ‘The People’s Depot’, as MMRDA encourages Mumbai residents to engage with and understand the depot’s functions. The initiative is aimed at fostering a sense of public ownership as the city’s metro network continues to expand.

Overall, the Mandale Depot marks a major leap in Mumbai’s public transportation landscape, strengthening urban mobility and paving the way for a more efficient and sustainable metro network.
