November 17, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is advancing plans to develop Mumbai’s second dedicated bird park in Mulund, with four companies submitting bids for the Rs 166-crore project. Officials confirmed that work could begin as early as December once the contract is awarded. Spread across a 17-acre plot near the Johnson & Johnson factory in Nahur, close to Yogi Hills, the new facility is intended to complement the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan (Byculla Zoo) and significantly expand the city’s green, biodiversity-focused public spaces.
According to officials, the Mulund Bird Park will house more than 200 species, including several exotic varieties from Africa, Australia, and South America. The layout includes large aviaries, landscaped zones designed to mimic natural habitats, an interpretation centre and a dedicated children’s area. The park will be divided into four thematic regions—tropical, African, Australian, and aquatic—to offer an immersive experience for visitors. Expected species include flamingos, parrots, macaws, cockatoos, black swans, ostriches, scarlet ibises, and turacos, creating what officials describe as a “diverse and colorful birdwatching experience.”
Supporting infrastructure will include a veterinary clinic, an incubation and breeding centre, an amphitheatre, a food court, and parking facilities. The tender for the bird park was originally floated in August 2022, but had to be postponed due to a lack of technically qualified bidders. The revised tender, issued this year, received greater participation, and officials expect the selection process to conclude by October.
Key preparatory work—such as submitting the detailed development plan to the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) and designing the continent-themed zones—has already been completed. Local authorities stated that the project aims to serve both educational and recreational purposes, attracting residents and tourists while strengthening Mumbai’s ecological infrastructure and promoting awareness of bird conservation.
