November 17, 2025: The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL), operator of the fully underground Metro 3—popularly known as the Aqua Line—is preparing to build two new subways that will enhance last-mile connectivity between major stations, surrounding neighbourhoods, and upcoming transport projects. Officials familiar with the plan told Hindustan Times that one of the subways will link the Worli Science Centre station to the Mahalaxmi racecourse, the Worli promenade, and the Nehru Planetarium, while the second will connect the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) station directly to the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train terminal.
MMRCL director R Ramana confirmed that work on the proposal is moving forward. “We will soon appoint an agency to prepare a detailed project report to construct the two pedestrian vestibules or subways spread over 3 kilometres,” he told HT. He added that the same agency would later serve as the project management consultant during the construction phase.
According to officials, the Worli Science Centre station subway will be approximately 1.6 km long. It is expected to significantly improve access to the racecourse, the planned garden adjoining the Coastal Road, and a future commercial hub on the site formerly occupied by the now-defunct Worli Dairy. “The state urban development department will soon modify the Development Control and Promotional Regulations and change the reservation of the Worli Dairy plot to commercial,” an official said. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has already been designated as the planning authority for this land parcel.
The second proposed subway, measuring around 1.4 km, will connect the BKC station with the bullet train terminal, ensuring seamless movement between the two major transit systems.
MMRCL officials noted that the cost estimates for both subways will be finalised after the detailed project report is completed.
