BMC Advances Rs 1,635-Crore Plan For 4.24 Km LBS Marg Flyover To Decongest Kurla–Ghatkopar Corridor

November 19, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has moved forward with a comprehensive proposal for a 4.24 km elevated corridor on LBS Marg, aimed at easing the longstanding traffic bottlenecks between Kurla West and Ghatkopar West. According to the civic body, the flyover will start near Kalpana Talkies in Kurla and end near Pankhe Shah Baba Dargah in Ghatkopar, creating a seamless elevated route above some of the city’s most gridlocked junctions.

Of the total length, 3.91 km will comprise the main elevated stretch, supported by approach ramps measuring 146 metres at the Kurla end and 180 metres at the Ghatkopar end. The project also proposes three connecting arms of around 695 metres, designed to facilitate smoother entry and exit for vehicles merging from adjoining roads.

The structure will feature four lanes with a total width of 16.5 metres and will be constructed using steel girders and an RCC deck slab superstructure. Officials said the design is intended to bypass persistent slowdowns at the Andheri–Ghatkopar Link Road junction, the area near Ghatkopar railway station, and the Sant Narsi Mehta Road junction.

The alignment runs through a complex zone already housing Metro rail infrastructure and an MRIDC bridge project. Due to these constraints, the flyover must be built at a higher elevation than typical road-over-bridge designs. To address these challenges, the BMC has sought technical inputs from VJTI on design methodology, structural strategy, and phased execution.

The contractor selected will also undertake additional works such as drainage upgrades, installation of road furniture, noise barriers, and other ancillary infrastructure to ensure seamless integration with the surrounding road network.

Estimated to cost Rs 1,635 crore, the project will take four years to complete. The BMC has invited bids exclusively from companies with at least ten years of experience handling complex road or flyover projects for government or public sector bodies. Joint ventures between two firms are also allowed, given the project’s scale.
