November 24, 2025: As the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) prepares to begin full-scale operations within the next year, the region has initiated major road infrastructure upgrades. Among the most significant is the ₹846 crore redevelopment of the Thane–Belapur Road, a crucial arterial corridor linking Navi Mumbai’s industrial, commercial, and residential hubs. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) confirmed that the long-pending overhaul is being executed under the central government’s Hybrid Annuity Model, enabling shared public funding and staggered contractor payments. The project includes three new flyovers along with a complete reconstruction of the highway.
Three New Flyovers to Ease Traffic
The new flyovers will be built at Rabale Junction for Rs 171 crore, between Crystal House and Pawne for Rs 110 crore, and from BASF Company to the Hyundai showroom in Mahape for Rs 338 crore. Additionally, a Rs 227 crore reconstruction of the current corridor has been approved. Another flyover at Turbhe — a long-standing congestion point due to rail and industrial traffic — is already underway. Emphasizing the importance of the upgrade, NMMC city engineer Shirish Aradwad said, “The renovation work of Thane–Belapur Road will be undertaken, which includes the renovation of the road along with three new flyovers. This decision has been taken considering the future increase in passenger and freight traffic. The process has been initiated.”
Funding Support Sought From MIDC
To manage rising industrial traffic, NMMC has requested Rs 400 crore from the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation to co-fund the flyover projects. NMMC commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde noted, “Given the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport and the expansion of the MIDC area, it is necessary to plan these new flyover projects on Thane–Belapur Road from now itself.”
Key Link in Upcoming Mobility Network
The corridor, which connects Airoli, Rabale, Ghansoli, Kopar Khairane, and Turbhe, will receive phased upgrades including drainage works, paver block replacement, full road reconstruction, and added green cover. Once completed, it will serve as a major airport access route, linking seamlessly with the Katai tunnel, Sion–Panvel Highway, Thane–NMIA Elevated Corridor, and Ulwe Coastal Road, positioning it as a vital part of the region’s expanding mobility grid.
