November 26, 2025: Mumbai University has launched a 200 kW solar power project at its Kalina campus, enabling seven key buildings to run entirely on renewable energy. The initiative marks a major step in the university’s efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and significantly cut its carbon footprint. The buildings now powered by the solar system include Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Bhavan, Feroz Shah Mehta Bhavan, C. D. Deshmukh Bhavan, the Old Lecture Complex, the Life Science Building, Maulana Abdul Kalam Bhavan, and the Department of Biophysics.
To execute the project, the university has signed a memorandum of understanding with Comet India and United Way Mumbai. Equipped with a net metering system, the installation is expected to generate nearly 260,000 units of electricity annually. With this output, the university anticipates reducing its monthly electricity expenditure by more than INR 4 lakh, creating long-term financial and environmental benefits.
Aligned with its broader ‘Green Campus’ mission, Mumbai University has also introduced a plastic bottle–shredding machine at the Kalina campus to support on-site recycling and strengthen waste-management practices. These measures build upon earlier sustainability initiatives, including the installation of solar-power systems at the university’s Thane sub-campus and the engineering and applied sciences campus in Kalyan.
In addition to infrastructure upgrades, the university has been actively involving students in climate-skills programmes aimed at fostering participation in environmental projects. The institution is also conducting a detailed biodiversity audit to assess and preserve the natural richness of its grounds. Spread across 243 acres, the Kalina campus is recognised for its expansive greenery amid an otherwise dense urban environment.
The university’s long-standing commitment to ecological preservation is further reflected in the biodiversity park developed on the campus, covering around 1.5 acres. Serving as a vital green lung, it underscores Mumbai University’s ongoing efforts to create a more sustainable and environmentally responsible campus ecosystem.
