BMC Announces Major Water Cuts Across Mumbai As Pipeline Repair And Replacement Work Begins

December 1, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced significant water disruptions across Mumbai as major maintenance and replacement work on key city pipelines begins in early December. The civic body has outlined two separate shutdowns: a complete halt in parts of the western suburbs and a citywide 15% cut, both described as essential steps in upgrading Mumbai’s water distribution network.

An 18-hour shutdown has been scheduled in Kandivali and Borivali to connect two major 900 mm aqueducts. Officials said the linkage will “create an improved pathway for future water flow.” The operation will run from around 1.30 pm on December 4 to 7.30 am on December 5, during which the water supply will stop completely in areas such as Chikoowadi, Jaun Pada, and Gorai. Localities dependent on evening supply, including Thakur Village and Samata Nagar, will also face a full-day disruption. Normal supply is expected to resume by the evening of December 5, and residents have been advised to use water judiciously.

Simultaneously, a 24-hour 15% water cut will be imposed across 14 municipal wards from 10 am on December 3 to 10 am on December 4. This reduction is linked to the replacement of the 2,750 mm Tansa pipeline, a key raw water conduit supplying the Bhandup Water Treatment Plant. Areas covered under the advisory include Colaba, Churchgate, Marine Lines, Dadar, Worli, Bandra, Khar, Santacruz, Andheri, Goregaon, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali, Kurla, Powai, and Vikhroli. The BMC has urged residents across these localities to store adequate water and limit usage until the supply stabilises.

The civic body has positioned both actions as critical components of Mumbai’s long-term water security strategy. According to officials, the upgrades are aimed at reducing leakages, improving pressure stability, and creating alternative supply pathways to minimise disruptions during emergencies. While acknowledging inconvenience, the BMC emphasised that the improvements will enhance overall distribution efficiency in the coming years.
