December 1, 2025: The first phase of the 12.2-km Goregaon–Mulund Link Road (GMLR), a major cross-city connector being built by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), is expected to be operational by 2026. The corridor will eventually link Goregaon in the western suburbs to Mulund in the eastern suburbs through a combination of tunnels, bridges, and traffic interchanges.
The GMLR is being developed in four phases. The flyover forming the first phase will originate near the Dindoshi court and extend up to Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), from where motorists will gain direct access to the twin underground tunnels planned in later stages. Spanning 1.2 km, the flyover will include six lanes and an elevated rotary built on a raised platform to enable smoother movement. Walkways on both sides and deck slabs are also part of the design.
Officials said the bridge will streamline traffic between Dindoshi and SGNP, and once the tunnels are complete, vehicles will be able to enter them directly from the flyover. Tunnel boring is scheduled to begin in 2026, with civil works likely to take around one year.
Construction progress is advancing, with 31 pillars planned for the flyover, of which 27 have already been completed. Work on the remaining pillars is underway. The west-bound arm is targeted for completion by January 2026, and the east-bound arm by April 2026, after which post-construction work will be taken up. Authorities aim to open the flyover by May 2026.
“This flyover will mark the end of the first stage of the project. In the long run, we aim to connect the GMLR along with the Versova-Bhayander coastal road. By 2028, commuting through the suburban belt will become very easy as these two projects will be an absolute game-changer,” said Abhijit Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects).
The total cost of the GMLR project is Rs 14,000 crore, with full completion targeted for 2028.
