First Phases Of Two Mumbai Metro Lines Expected To Open By December-End

December 4, 2025: The first phases of two new metro lines in Mumbai are likely to be operational by the end of this month, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) confirmed to Hindustan Times. A section of Metro Line 9, connecting Dahisar East to Kashigaon, and a stretch of Line 2B, between Diamond Garden and Mandale, will be thrown open by December 31.

These sections represent the first phase of the respective metro corridors. Sources indicate that the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) is expected to grant clearance for Line 9, taking into account the enforcement of the model code of conduct during the local body elections. Officials also confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the new stretches.

Metro Line 9, an extension of Line 7, spans 13.58 km as an elevated corridor connecting Dahisar East with Mira-Bhayandar. Line 2B, running from DN Nagar to Mandale in Mankhurd, is still under construction, with trial runs underway on its first 5.3-km phase between Mandale and Diamond Garden in Chembur.

The MMRDA plans to operationalise the second phase of Line 2B—from DN Nagar to Saraswat Nagar in Khar—by next summer. Once the remaining central stretch between Saraswat Nagar and Diamond Garden is completed, the 23.6-km corridor with 20 stations will provide a critical second east-west metro connection across the city, improving connectivity and easing congestion on key routes.

Officials highlighted that the phased opening will allow commuters to begin using the metro service immediately, even as work continues on the remaining sections. With both lines nearing completion, residents in northern and eastern suburbs can expect faster and more convenient travel options in the coming months.
