Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor Records Steady Progress In Maharashtra

December 13, 2025: India’s first high-speed rail corridor, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project, is steadily progressing in Maharashtra, with key construction milestones achieved across stations and tunnelling works. The Centre informed Parliament that foundation work is currently underway at three stations in the state, while the challenging under-sea tunnel segment has also seen measurable advancement.

In a written response in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday (10 December), Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that foundation activities are in progress at the Thane, Virar and Boisar stations. He further noted that four kilometres of the under-sea tunnel between Ghansoli and Shilphata have already been completed, marking a significant step in one of the project’s most complex engineering components.

Data shared by the minister indicates that, within Maharashtra, foundation work has been completed over 62 kilometres, while pier construction has reached 55 kilometres. Girder casting has progressed across five kilometres, and girder launching has been carried out over one kilometre so far.

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor spans a total length of 508 kilometres and is being implemented with technical and financial support from the Government of Japan. The route passes through Maharashtra, Gujarat and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and will feature 12 stations located at Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.

Construction progress in Gujarat has been significantly faster. According to the information presented in Parliament, foundation work covering 352 kilometres and pier construction across 351 kilometres have been completed in the state. Girder casting has been carried out over 339 kilometres, while girder launching has advanced across 328 kilometres.

Additionally, track installation has been completed over 124 kilometres, and overhead equipment mast erection has progressed along 80 kilometres in Gujarat. Foundation work has also been completed at all stations in the state, including Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Anand, Vadodara, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati, underscoring the project’s steady advancement toward operational readiness.
