December 18, 2025: The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has taken over the upkeep of green belts along MG Road, discontinuing the earlier Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arrangement after finding the maintenance work by a private agency unsatisfactory, officials confirmed. The responsibility has now been handed to GMDA’s infrastructure division.
According to officials, the decision followed an inspection by newly appointed GMDA chief executive officer PC Meena on December 5. During the visit, it was observed that the agency entrusted with the work had failed to carry out adequate plantation and upkeep of the green areas. Officials noted that insufficient fencing and poor maintenance had allowed street vendors to encroach upon the newly developed infrastructure, hampering the movement of pedestrians and cyclists along the stretch.
“It has been decided to terminate the maintenance agreement under CSR. The infrastructure one division has been directed to erect guard rails along the newly developed infrastructure and undertake the development and maintenance of the green areas,” a senior GMDA official said.
In addition to restoring and protecting the green belts, GMDA has also instructed its enforcement wing to step up action against encroachments. Directions have been issued to remove unauthorised street vendors operating on the MG Road stretch, ensure the strict clearance of illegally parked vehicles, and conduct regular enforcement drives to prevent recurrence.
The MG Road beautification project, launched in 2023, is a key urban improvement initiative aimed at making one of Gurugram’s busiest corridors more commuter- and pedestrian-friendly. The project includes the development of footpaths, dedicated cycling tracks, landscaped green belts, and bus bays, with an estimated investment exceeding ₹11 crore.
GMDA officials said the authority’s direct involvement in maintenance is expected to improve accountability and ensure consistent upkeep of the public infrastructure. The focus will be on enhancing walkability, improving safety for cyclists, and preserving the green cover along the road.
A senior GMDA enforcement official said that action against encroachments would be carried out in an organised and phased manner. “Encroachments on the road will be removed soon in a planned manner,” the official said, adding that sustained enforcement would be critical to maintaining the improvements made under the project.
