December 26, 2025: Mumbai’s Mulund railway station is poised for a significant transformation, with the much-anticipated “jodi” bridges expected to be opened to commuters by March 2026. The project is designed to substantially improve passenger circulation across the busy suburban station and forms a key part of its broader modernisation programme aligned with sustainable urban transport goals.
The redevelopment includes an elevated deck, multiple new foot overbridges (FOBs), and an upgraded entrance plaza aimed at streamlining movement for thousands of daily commuters. Planned passenger amenities feature 14 staircases, seven escalators, and two elevators, enabling smoother vertical and horizontal connectivity across platforms. A major highlight is the jodi connector bridge at the CSMT end, which will connect the upcoming east–west BMC bridge with a newly built, wider FOB, helping reduce congestion during peak hours. “Platform 1 alone will feature a three-metre-wide staircase and a 10.5-metre-wide deck, while platforms 2 to 4 are being integrated with the public FOBs to improve flow,” a senior official explained.
At the Kalyan end, construction is underway on a six-metre-wide, 43-metre-long north FOB to better distribute commuter traffic between both ends of the station. Work on foundations and columns is progressing steadily, with plans for UP escalators on the CSMT side and wider staircases on the Kalyan side to ensure balanced movement throughout the day.
The project’s largest element is a 165-metre-long elevated deck running parallel to Platform 1. Measuring 16.5 metres in width, the deck will serve as a linear concourse with multiple vertical exits, easing bottlenecks and improving accessibility. The existing 4.5-metre-wide FOB will eventually be replaced by a new 8-metre-wide, 56-metre-long structure, with dismantling scheduled only after the new bridge becomes operational.
Urban transport experts say such upgrades are crucial to reducing overcrowding and enhancing safety. Once completed, the Mulund station redevelopment is expected to set a new benchmark for efficient, inclusive suburban railway infrastructure in Mumbai.
