December 27, 2025: The Hetawane Water Supply Augmentation Scheme, a landmark project aimed at meeting the growing water demand of Navi Mumbai and other Cidco-developed areas, is poised for a significant milestone on December 29. The City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (Cidco), executing the ambitious scheme, will achieve the first tunnel breakthrough at Shaft-4 in Wahal village, part of Water Tunnel Package-1.
The project involves constructing a 13.25-km raw water tunnel and a 15.4-km treated water tunnel, which, upon completion, is expected to nearly double Cidco’s water supply capacity from 120 million litres per day (MLD) to 270 MLD. Officials emphasized that this is the first tunnelling project undertaken by Cidco, making the breakthrough a key step in accelerating remaining works and ensuring long-term water security for the rapidly developing region.
Package-1, implemented by Afcons Infrastructure Ltd, comprises an 8.7-km treated water tunnel, of which 5.52 km has already been completed. The tunnel runs at an approximate depth of 100 metres below ground, navigating through complex geological formations.
Officials noted that the project faced multiple challenges, including hard rock formations in the Deccan Sahyadri region, limited worksite space, and demanding material removal operations. Despite these hurdles, sustained coordination between Cidco engineers and the contractor’s team enabled steady progress toward the breakthrough.
Once fully operational, the Hetawane tunnels will provide a reliable and enhanced water supply, supporting urban growth and improving living standards in Navi Mumbai. Officials highlighted that the breakthrough will not only accelerate construction but also play a critical role in addressing future water demand as the city expands.
With this achievement, Cidco reinforces its commitment to sustainable infrastructure development, ensuring that Navi Mumbai’s residents and industries benefit from uninterrupted access to safe and sufficient water.
