December 29, 2025: Several major infrastructure projects in Bandra East have come under scrutiny after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s H-East ward issued show-cause notices for violations of air pollution control norms. The action targets projects such as Metro Line 2B works and the construction of the new Bombay High Court building, highlighting growing civic concern over environmental compliance in densely populated zones.
According to civic officials, inspections revealed that contractors at these sites failed to implement mandatory dust mitigation and pollution control measures. As a result, they have been directed to submit explanations and take immediate corrective steps. Authorities have warned that failure to comply could lead to stringent action, including suspension of construction activities.
This is not the first instance of enforcement in the area. Earlier, the H-East ward had issued similar notices to the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project site at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Despite prior warnings, a ready-mix concrete plant operating there continued to flout prescribed guidelines, prompting the civic body to temporarily shut down its operations.
Officials pointed out that common violations across multiple sites include inadequate dust suppression systems such as misting, poor housekeeping, and missing or ineffective barricading. These lapses not only worsen air quality but also pose health and safety risks to nearby residents, office-goers, and commuters in the area.
Municipal authorities have reiterated that adherence to air pollution control regulations is non-negotiable for all construction and infrastructure projects, regardless of scale or importance. The current round of notices forms part of a wider enforcement drive aimed at strengthening environmental governance and ensuring that urban development does not come at the cost of public health.
Given Bandra East’s high-density profile and concentration of large infrastructure works, officials said monitoring will remain strict. Regular inspections and follow-up action will continue to ensure that developers and contractors comply fully with environmental norms, reinforcing the city’s commitment to more sustainable and responsible urban growth.
